Book Donations
The Friends of The Seattle Public Library sells and re-distributes donated books to further our work in supporting literacy in Seattle communities.
Guidelines for acceptable donations
If in doubt, ask “Would I give this book to a friend?” If yes, please donate to the Friends!
Yes, please!
- Gently-used adult and children’s books
- Gently-used paperbacks and hard covers
- Advance Reader Copies of books – these are given away at community events
- Cookbooks? Recent textbooks? Former library books? Yes, those are books!
- Books in any world language
- Magazines in good condition, please remove mailing labels
- Space is limited, donations are limited to up to 80 books per scheduled appointment
No, thank you!
- Books that are musty, moldy, soiled, liquid-damaged, broken, etc.
- Books that are highlighted or marked-up
- Encyclopedia sets (contact us for consideration of the set)
- VHS, music cassettes, DVDs, audiobooks
- music scores
4 Ways to Donate Books:
- 25 or fewer sellable books can be donated at the FriendShop at any time during business hours. Monday – Saturday, 11 a.m – 5 p.m.
- 80 or fewer sellable books can be donated at the FriendShop by making an appointment. On the day of your appointment bring the books to the FriendShop. We will meet you at the 5th Avenue entrance with a book cart, park on 5th Avenue.
- Estate or special collections can be donated with our partner at Collins Books. Email [email protected] or call 206.323.3999 and let them know you would like to arrange for a donation on behalf of the Friends of the Seattle Public Library.
- Donate re-sellable books at our monthly Used Book Sales! They are held at our Georgetown location on the second Saturday of every month and every Thursday. Visit the Events page for more information.

ABOUT COLLINS BOOKS
Collins Books of Northeast Seattle is partnering with the Friends to accept larger book donations on our behalf.
In business since 1969, Collins Books’ specialty is hard to find, out of print, scholarly used and rare books. If you have a collection of books that you are ready to donate to FoSPL, please contact Collins Books directly for a drop-off appointment and they will work with you to ensure that FoSPL benefits from the donation of your collection. In special circumstances, house calls can be made. Just tell them you would like your donation to benefit the Friends of The Seattle Public Library (FoSPL).
