Who Are We?
Who are the Friends of the Seattle Public Library?
Anyone can become a Friend of the library! We are book lovers, information seekers, readers, listeners, music and movie buffs. We are young and old, with varying interests and backgrounds. We all treasure ideas and value the public library as a vital community resource. And we all believe that The SPL has an excellent library, ready to serve the whole community.
What do the Friends do?
The Friends help with library programs, raise funds for special purposes, volunteer to do projects, promote community awareness of the library, and support the freedom of individuals to read what they wish. Books donated by the community are sold in yearly book sales or the FriendShop with proceeds used for library projects. Some Friends are deeply involved, some lend their moral support.
All have the satisfaction of knowing they have joined with others in showing strong support for their public library.
Friends help to expand the libraries in the 21st century & beyond!
On Nov. 3, 1998, Seattle voters overwhelmingly approved the $196.4 million “Libraries for All” bond measure to upgrade The Seattle Public Library with new facilities, technology, and books.
The bond proceeds helped to fund the new Central library and new and improved branches throughout the City. The enhanced branches were completed in 2008.
The Friends remind the City Council and the community about important events such as this and encourage everyone to get out and vote!
