The Friends

of The Seattle Public Library

Who are the Friends of the Seattle Public Library?
We are book lovers, information seekers, readers, listeners, music and movie buffs. We are young and old, with varying interests and backgrounds. We all treasure ideas and value the public library as a vital community resource. We all believe that The Seattle Public Library is an excellent library, ready to serve the whole community. Become a Friend today!

What do the Friends do?
The Friends support library programs, raise funds for special purposes, volunteer to do projects, promote community awareness of libraries, advocate for robust city funding of The Library, and support the freedom of individuals to read what they wish. We raise funds, with the help of our tireless volunteers, at our famous twice-yearly Book Sales of books and media donated by the community, and materials no longer needed by the Library. We and our volunteers also operate the innovative FriendShop at the Central Library. Some Friends are deeply involved, some lend their moral support.  For more about the Friends, visit our blog

The Seattle Public Library will be closed August 30 - September 5

All Library locations will be closed Monday, August 30 through Sunday, September 5 due to citywide budget cuts.  The Library will also be closed Monday, September 6 for Labor Day.

To learn more on the closure...

The Library has been told that its cut next year will range from $4.9 million - $7.4 million - this is between 3-5 times more than the 2010 cuts.

The Friends believe the Library provides essential services for our community and that shelves should remain filled and Library doors stay open.
