Cultural Communities Project

Friends of The Seattle Public Library make ongoing grants to The Seattle Public Library to fund the Library’s Cultural Communities project. The goal of the project is to improve library services to the city’s immigrant and refugee communities.

Some examples of funding in 2004 are:

  • $20,418 for materials in the Beacon Hill Library Language Learning Center

Over 600 items were purchased for this collection. Additionally, $10,250 was spent to provide audio-visual equipment and computer hardware and software to support language learning.

  •
$46,903 for outreach, communications materials, and program production systemwide

Funds from the Friends of The Seattle Public Library have been applied to communications and programming for Spanish and Vietnamese speakers. This funding has specifically allowed the Library to produce welcome brochures in Spanish and Vietnamese, offer dial-a-story programs and conduct outreach efforts. The Seattle Public Library and its branches have also created focus groups as well as participated in community festivals with both communities.
